Cortisol, Free and Total, Serum (CORTO)

Cortisol, Free and Total, Serum (CORTO)

The Mayo Clinic Cortisol, Free and Total, Serum (CORTO) screening is a blood test designed to measure the levels of cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, in the bloodstream. Cortisol plays a crucial role in regulating various body functions, including metabolism, immune response, stress response, and blood pressure. This screening test provides valuable information about both free and total cortisol levels in the blood. Free cortisol refers to the biologically active form of the hormone, while total cortisol includes both free cortisol and cortisol bound to proteins.

The CORTO screening is often used to evaluate adrenal function, diagnose and monitor conditions such as Cushing's syndrome and Addison's disease, and assess the body's response to stress. Abnormal cortisol levels can indicate hormonal imbalances, adrenal dysfunction, or other underlying health issues. By analyzing the results of the Mayo Clinic Cortisol, Free and Total, Serum (CORTO) screening, healthcare providers can make informed decisions regarding treatment plans and interventions. This test provides essential insights into hormonal health, enabling proper management and optimization of patient care.

Understanding the Cortisol, Free and Total (CORTO) Blood Test

The Cortisol, Free and Total (CORTO) blood test is a comprehensive evaluation of cortisol levels in your body. Cortisol is a steroid hormone that plays a pivotal role in regulating numerous physiological processes. It is often referred to as the "stress hormone" because its levels can increase in response to stress or low blood glucose.
This test measures both free cortisol, which is not bound to proteins, and total cortisol, which includes cortisol bound to proteins. Monitoring cortisol levels is essential for assessing adrenal gland function, managing stress-related conditions, and diagnosing adrenal disorders.
