The Mayo Clinic Urate/Uric Acid (URIC) test is a blood test that measures the levels of uric acid in the blood. Uric acid is a waste product that is produced when the body breaks down purines, which are found in many foods and are also produced by the body. High levels of uric acid in the blood can lead to a condition called gout, which causes painful joint inflammation. The URIC test is typically ordered to diagnose gout or to monitor uric acid levels in individuals who are at risk of developing gout. It may also be ordered to help diagnose other conditions related to high uric acid levels, such as kidney stones.
