Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT)

Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT)

The Mayo Clinic Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) test is used to measure the amount of ALT, an enzyme found mostly in the liver, in a person's blood. When liver cells are damaged or destroyed, ALT is released into the bloodstream, indicating liver damage or disease. The ALT test is often used to diagnose liver conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. It can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for these conditions. High levels of ALT can also be caused by certain medications, alcohol consumption, and other medical conditions such as muscle disorders.

Early Detection for Liver Health with ALT Screening

Mayo Clinic's ALT screening is a valuable tool for early detection of liver diseases. Elevated ALT levels can signal liver damage before other symptoms arise, providing a crucial window for early intervention. This test, which uses a specific Photometric Rate method, is particularly adept at identifying issues in liver cell integrity. It's an indispensable part of evaluating liver health, especially for individuals at risk of liver diseases.
