Magnesium (MGS)

Magnesium (MGS)

The Mayo Clinic Magnesium (MGS) test is used to measure the amount of magnesium in a person's blood. Magnesium is an essential mineral that is involved in numerous processes in the body, including muscle and nerve function, heart rhythm regulation, and bone health. Magnesium deficiency can lead to symptoms such as muscle weakness, cramps, and irregular heartbeat. The MGS test is commonly ordered to evaluate magnesium levels in people with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, kidney disease, or alcoholism, which may affect magnesium absorption and metabolism. The test may also be used to monitor the effectiveness of magnesium supplementation or to diagnose magnesium toxicity.

The Role of Magnesium

Magnesium is crucial for maintaining proper muscle and nerve function, supporting a healthy immune system, and ensuring a regular heartbeat. It also contributes to strong bones and helps regulate blood sugar levels.
