Copper (CUS1)

Copper (CUS1)

The Mayo Clinic Copper (CUS1) test is a blood test used to measure the amount of copper in the blood. Copper is an essential mineral needed for various functions in the body, including the production of red blood cells, maintaining healthy bones, and supporting the immune system. However, excessive levels of copper in the body can lead to health problems such as Wilson's disease, a rare inherited disorder that causes copper to accumulate in the liver, brain, and other organs. The test is typically ordered when a person is showing signs and symptoms of copper deficiency or excess.

Essential for Tracking Copper-Related Health Issues

The CUS1 screening at Mayo Clinic is an important diagnostic tool for assessing copper levels in the body. It is particularly useful for patients suspected of having Wilson's disease or those with liver dysfunction, as copper levels can be indicative of these conditions. Monitoring copper levels is also important for patients receiving copper supplementation or with dietary concerns that might lead to copper deficiency. The test helps in the timely identification of both high and low copper levels, which are essential for maintaining overall health.

Comprehensive Health Assessment with CUS1

Regular CUS1 screenings are critical for patients with known risks of copper imbalance. This test plays a significant role in the ongoing management of conditions like Wilson's disease, guiding treatment and dietary recommendations. It's also beneficial for evaluating patients with unexplained anemia, neutropenia, or neurological symptoms. For individuals in high-risk environments or occupations involving copper, this screening aids in monitoring potential overexposure. The CUS1 test serves as a comprehensive tool in preventive health care and disease management.
